Re: No More, and No Less

The lights are out, but there's lots of glowing things. He's a fantasy wizard, for goshsakes. If he doesn't have at least three shimmering pendants and staves with auras of power, then what's he doing guiding young heroes around?

He stayed late at the bar, as was his habit. He generally took the same route home every night – or more properly early morning, when he could be bothered to remember to make it so. These things had all been noted. They were waiting for him down the darkest of the alleys. No one could have said how ...

No More, and No Less

The goblet glowed like the fires of creation, lighting the hero’s face and giving it the cast of a man grown instead of a boy pressed into service too young. “Speak, Arnol!” commanded the great mage Battresin. “After all our travails, now is the moment! Your words will reshape the world and drive th...

Domino

There was a knock at the door. “The circle is divided,” the man in the crimson hat said dolorously. “It waits only to be devoured.” “Time is but an illusion of the flesh,” came the response. “Who can say whether it has been a day or ten thousand days since the world began?” “Though the wind is chill...

Advent Ghosts

My blogger-friend Loren Eaton of the review/writing/musings blog "I Saw Lightning Fall" does an annual microfiction event that he calls Advent Ghosts, celebrating the lost tradition of scary or ghostly stories around the fire during Christmas time.  Here's the link to the stories . In the grand trad...

Re: Days of Rain

I had to sit through most of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" when I took Archie to get his hair cut. I even used to like the book itself.

I advise against seeing the movie unless you are under duress.

Lots of stuff has been paid for. It's in various places around the web, mostly. ;-) Except for the thirty or so stories I'm still shopping around. :-(

I don't think it was on the DC, no. I just thought I'd help the public area not look so empty.

All at Once

They found the birds before the sun rose in the morning. Harker had his key in the library door when he noticed the first one. Then a second. A third. Six in all. Little gray birds, lying on the low wall. Not neatly, like a butcher would lay them out. Haphazard. Fallen all at once. “Like a sacrifice...

The Lights In-Between

“Good morning, Tibbs,” Rasa said. She said it every morning, even when there wasn’t a morning. If she hadn’t stopped when Tibbs left, why stop when there wasn’t a sun to rise? Rasa rolled out of the bed, sinking too deeply into the foam and the overlarge depression in it. Tibbs liked it soft. After ...

The argument had been going on for what felt like hours. They'd been at it when I came in, and they were still going three and a half beers later. I was trying out a new bar, since I knew Vicki would be at The Rooster with all of her (formerly our) friends. "The hell it is!" That was the one in the ...

He stood with his foot upon the cashier’s neck as he emptied the register drawer into a valise. “Oh, you moral vagrant, you wastrel, you miscreant,” he chided, “to permit this theft.” He stepped outside and encountered a slender woman of middle years, whom he grasped and osculated forcefully. “Thou ...

Talons Red as Embers, Paws Black as Soot

The sound of firetrucks woke Darren. He sat up and began coughing; smoke already filled the top half of the room. “Stay low!” Darren called to Alberta. Together they crept out the front door to the hallway. The other apartments already hung open. Darren started toward the window, but Alberta yanked ...

All He Asked Was If Clyde Knew What Happened to His Lawnmowe

Clyde was kneeling by the cinderblock foundation of the shed. “Have you been feeding him at all? Look at this flaking on the sides.” “The old paint?” “Seems to be ailing. I’d recommend a good dose of lard and three-quarters-inch nails, just for starters, and keep that up for at least two weeks. Prob...
