What We Don't Talk About

“Breakfast!” Mom trilled. The horror opened its misshapen jaw as the bowl of porridge passed. Green sludge dripped between its crooked, needlelike teeth and spilled with a hiss into the vessel. “Mom...” said Harriet. “Shush!” Mom said. She turned away, deliberately not looking at the horror’s spiked...

The Fourth Wall

Lisa sat across from him. She toyed with her spaghetti carbonara. The date was not going well, but Brian consoled himself that it had not been his idea. “You’re so distracted,” she burst out. A ninja gently tousled her hair, mimicking a breeze from the ‘ceiling fan’ overhead. “Am I that boring, that...

Commutation

“Morning, Dave,” said Carl. He opened his car door and did a few brief calisthenics. Carl was a health nut. “Morning.” Dave rubbed at his stubble and un-reclined his seat. The driver’s seat only went back so far, but there was always the chance traffic could start moving. Dave was an optimist. “I’m ...

Perhaps Tomorrow

Brian got up too early. He got stuck in traffic anyway. At work, he got yelled at for not wearing the stupid hat, and then he found a hole in his uniform shirt. When he got out, some asshole had added a new dent to his side door. At home, the ancient computer rattled and whirred, and he wondered if ...

“ What is going on?” Harris thundered. He shouted in surprise at the flash of lightning that came concurrently. “Stop using said-bookisms,” Julie hissed. She sagged a bit as she began to deflate, and clamped a hand over her nose to stem the flow. The hissing stopped. “I just don’t understand,” Harri...

Re: Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na

It's difficult to write in enough that most people will "get it" while leaving it opaque enough that most people still have to "get it," since in stories like this the fun is all in "getting" the reference.

The original title was "The Necessary Steps to Self-Improvement," but that felt a little on-the-nose.

Fashion Report

Men used to put on their hate as a matter of course whenever they went outside. Everyone wore hates all the time, and no one thought it was odd. Nowadays, a hate is not fashionable. If you have a hate, people will probably comment on it and ask you not to bring it inside or to the table. Though hate...

The Necessary Steps

I watched her walk away, and I watched myself do nothing to stop her. I could see myself sinking into a deepening rut at work, knuckling under to the bosses and giving up on life. God, I hated myself. So I killed me. It wasn’t hard. Just snuck up behind myself and jabbed a screwdriver in my ear. I d...

“The criminals haunt this city like ghosts,” the Commissioner said. “We’re trapped in this maze, and we just run around and around and never get anywhere.” “But sir! Do we really need to call... him ?” The young constable swallowed heavily. “He’s... outside the law. They say he can’t die. They say.....

This one started out almost 200 words. I'm still not sure I shouldn't have just left it as it was.
