Re: Drabble: “On the Beach” (Journals Theme)

On the positive side, I remember reading an article recently -- which I can't find by Google right now, despite spending more time than I have available this morning -- where The People Who Think About These Things modeled situations where two civilizations on different planets were able to communic...

Yeah, strawman, I am very sorry to say that I think your brother raises two excellent points.

Hmmmmm, damn it, never make assumptions wherever _Strawman_ is involved, apparently. Carry on.

Re: Drabble: “On the Beach” (Journals Theme)

Hi Varda! I'll explain the Drake Equation, assuming somebody else isn't beating me to it as I type. But perhaps more integral to understanding my story, I wonder how many people get the reference to the old 1959 book and movie (I heard it was re-made into a terrible TV movie in 2000, but I haven't s...

Drabble: “On the Beach” (Journals Theme)

Captain’s log -- summary. The erratic signal from L-Cygnus -- never getting far down the Periodic Table nor the Fibonacci sequence -- had seemed the best candidate for Earth's first hyperlight voyage. They must have been altogether too humanlike, these Cygnans. The cities we found were bombed-out an...

Re: The Oakbrook Horror (Apprentice Theme / Lovecraft Theme)

In general I really like this one. I don't know how it read at 300 words, but I like the way it flows -- leaving a few strategic gaps in the narrative was Lovecraft's style, of course... the only thing that was at first a bit jarring was the choice of a Big Mac as the antagonist. Now, don't get me w...

Re: Drabble: "Entrapment"

Thanks, "guns"! I was experimenting with several ways of getting across the idea that a billboard prohibiting cell phone use would ask you to use a cell phone. Perhaps printing out a phone number would be the best way to do it, although I liked the *711 because it can only be dialed from a cell phon...

Re: Upping my monthly Subscription to get B-Sides?

Awright, I did this late last night. You may have seen a new $10 subscription via PayPal from dewin_bach at Hotmail, that's the address I use for online bills etc. But that's me, Thomas Daulton, (which is also a pseudonym... ahh, the schizophrenia brought about by the Internet these days!), so you c...

On second reading, I guess the "booted feet" imply a superhero, but I think I'd still like a little more.

Re: Emergency Landing

Heh! Would work great as a visual gag in some kind of superhero movie. As a stand-alone drabble, though, I'd like to know something more about the protagonist. Even a name would help me decide if this is just a panel from a superhero comic, or some kind of magic or sci-fi.

Re: The Architects

I second the praise, this one was nicely written and evoked contemplation of the wonders our one-celled ancestors wrought... You and flintknapper are making me reconsider whether or not nonfiction drabbles can be fun! I believe there are two places in the world where you can still see living stromat...

Re: Mermaid Sushi

Definitely an attention-getter! I liked it generally as-is, but I think it might flow smoother in the first person. "It was the sign that first got my attention," etc. It makes things like the assumption of a hidden breathing apparatus flow better if it's an actual person making that assumption, not...

Upping my monthly Subscription to get B-Sides?

Hi all, I may have a nearly-unique situation/problem regarding my subscription, I didn't see any other more appropriate forum thread to ask about it. Thanks in advance for your time if I'm the only guy with this problem. For many months or something like a year, I have been a $5/month subscribing do...

Re: Drabble: "Entrapment"

Also, I was wondering if anyone picked up on the subtlety... given the title... It was awful conveeeeeeeenient that the huge billboard appeared right after the narrator saw a driver who was apparently texting. Makes you wonder if perhaps an undercover cop was driving an unmarked police car for this ...
