I interpreted it as the protagonist realising how he will have to deal with other people from now on. He may not have their disease, but he will still need to be like them to survive.

I like the idea behind this. That instant, unexpected shift in perspective has managed to become something far worse than the simple oblivion of a violent death. Thanks for the warm welcome. I've pretty much become a Drabblecast obsessor overnight after spending the entire weekend painting and decorating to the wonderful stories provided therein. Hopefully, I'll be sticking around!
