I'm sorry. In my area it's really a compliment.

The left and the right side of my brain war against each other and look at the world in radically different ways, but a tentative truce allows me to face the world, one day at a time.

When the cease-fire breaks down, I suffer, my family suffers, everyone that loves me suffers.

It's a lot of work, but short of having half my brain removed, the only way I know how to live.

When this spaceship lands, I nominate you to speak to this world's leaders.

Boulder and Braver

When the would-be bandits had fled, Taku hefted one of the fallen scimitars. “I wonder each time if I will forget my lessons, if this time I will feel the bite of their blades.”

“You are courageous, friend Taku,” said the Wisest Stone.

Taku shrugged. “I learned from you, how you are so fearless in the face of danger.”

“What danger could such men pose to me?” said the Wisest Stone. “I am a rock, and they are only humans. No, it is not courage to be what you are. It is brave to be what you strive for instead.”

I avoid puns unless they are incidental to the story. That is, I will almost never do a story whose sole point is the pun, but sideways puns (especially for titles) are not unheard of if you tiptoe through the archives at Mirrorshards....

I'm less pleased with this one because it relies too heavily on the reader having read the previous stories and thus knowing that Taku learns how to be a rock as part of his apprenticeship or whatever with the Wisest Stone. Continuity is blasphemy at Mirrorshards.

Hm, this one reminds me of The Lord of Light. Sam isn't the Buddha, but by pretending to be, he unleashes a real Buddha. Of course, Sam is pretty damned impressive and so is Wisest Stone. Much props. I like the furthering development of Taku.

These are still some of my favorite drabbles ever and they just keep getting better.

Sissy

While Taku and the Wisest Stone paused their journey atop a hill, they heard grunting and moaning. Soon, a man appeared, shoving a boulder uphill. Just as he reached the top, the boulder slipped and rolled away.

“That seems difficult,” Taku remarked.

“I am cursed. I defied the gods, and now must forever roll that rock.”

“Have you tried asking it for help?” asked the Wisest Stone. “Many are friendlier than they appear.”

The man’s eyes widened, and he fled.

“Most rocks cannot speak,” said Taku.

“Yes,” said the Wisest Stone, “but even failed conversation is easier than pointless strife.”

The dread specter of continuity results in a double-dose of the Wisest Stone...

---

Weight
"Are you not the Wisest Stone?" Taku stared in confusion and no small amount of fear.

"Of course," said the Wisest Stone.

"But you do not recall how you came here?"

"I do not."

"Our struggles against the Weed-King's armies?"

"Not a thing."

"Your short career as a professor of philosophy?"

"In truth, I feel as though a great weight were lifted from me."

Taku sighed. "I hope you recover soon, my friend. Come."

"I am a rock."

"But you have flown many leagues with me upon your back!"

"Ah," said the Wisest Stone. "It appears I have forgotten how."

Lift
"This is not going to work," said the Wisest Stone.

"I am trying as hard as I can, my friend," said Taku. He was bent nearly double, sweating under the weight of the Wisest Stone.

"I can see the Weed-King's armies from here."

"As always, you are most encouraging." Taku forced himself another step up the slope.

"You know," said the Wisest Stone conversationally, "in many ways you are lucky to be carrying me."

"Oh?" said Taku, thinking he knew the end of this familiar song.

"You can choose to put me down and not bear my weight any longer."

Contrarywise

"To lie," said the Wisest Stone, "is to create worlds. Each falsehood leads to a new universe, a place where it is truth instead, and in turn changes this world by rendering it impossible."

"Lies such as, 'Stones may fly'?" Taku asked.

"Yes. I chose for this world to contain that truth, and thus made it a lie somewhere else."

Taku pondered as they ascended to the next terrace. "How is one to tell a truth from a lie, then?"

"That is the simplest part," the Wisest Stone told him. "When it never occurs, you know it was a lie."

Wow.

I had to split reading all of these up into 3 sittings, but this is fantastic.

I caught one of these on your site. Worthy modern koans, in my opinion -- a little bit irreverent, because we're Westerners, and that's how we are. A couple of them aren't quite as cool as the others -- but on the whole they're very high quality and I look forward to reading more. The stone has a very interesting character, you pull off the mixture of fool and savant quite well!

If I ever get enough money together to waste on buying art for my silly site, I will commission a scene of Taku and the Wisest Stone sitting on a hillside staring off into the middle distance together.

He's already done one. "The Stone Who Loved" was in Episode 154. It's probably slightly difficult to find T&tWS episodes that are coherent one-shots and also in tune with the episode's theme.

I will state publicly that I would totally do up a full short story for the Wisest Stone, if requested. (By someone who can buy it, mind. Non-paying markets can rest assured that there will continue to be free drabbles featuring him for the foreseeable future.)
