He remembered how it had always worked.

Life was a circle; a cosmic merry-go-round.

When he died, he came back to live the same life over again.

He cried over those he had lost; friendships that had fallen out, all his failures and foibles.

Then, he looked back at Christmas as a child; how Santa Claus had magically appeared sometime in the night.

He recalled dreams; magical and fantastic when in their midst.

He thought about his first love; his first kiss.

The pain grew in his chest.

He remembered, looking forward to the good things that were to come.

It was actually a treatment of the concept of eternal recurrence. Maybe "The Relativity Prison" was too, however.

If in any lifetime, you had one perfect moment...

Thanks Pheno. I'm at that stage of life where many of my friends (and myself of course) are either facing the loss of parent or have already faced it. Also, taking care of my wife's grandfather at 96 puts the topic of "end of life" in my thoughts quite frequently.

In my younger years I always thought that it was something of a cruel joke that to be born and get to live came along with the price tag of eventual demise.

I've shifted more to looking for the value in a life well lived, and that dying isn't always such a bad thing, especially if one can find peace and happiness at the end of the journey.

Life can be viewed as a gift or a curse. Sure there's a lot of horse manure spread around, but with all of that, there has to be a pony in here somewhere.
