State of Nature

The five students and two teachers floated down Hudson River in a bright orange raft.

“Look,” said Penny. “A fish!” She pointed at the water.

“It's a pike,” said Jimmy.

“Very good,” said Mrs Sheldon. “And the pike eats...”

“Minnows!” exclaimed Mary.

“That's right!” said Mr Anderson. “And now we are close to West Point, and it's time for the history lesson.”

“I have a history question,” said Billy. “What were school days like when you were little?”

“They were,” Mrs Sheldon said, sighing, “nasty, brutish, and short.”
