Red Dreams

Post by Dairmid » Tue Sep 14, 2010 3:15 pm

It was the same dream every night, the same burning, searing flesh, streaming blood, rivers of it, every night without fail. I awoke shaken.

I trudged into my kitchen to eat, reading the labels of state-provided supplements; oatmeal, scrambled eggs, prune Danish. They tasted pretty much the same and nothing like what the labels said.

I ate and wrestled with the dream, the bloody charred flesh, so real I could smell it. All that blood. I shook off the sensation, but all day one thought propelled me through drudgery; the thought of sleep and the dream of rare, juicy meat.

I love the idea of the unconscious mind feeding us ideas that seem repulsive in the light of day, but become strangely appealing and almost addictive as time wears on. Are the fantasies slowly grinding us down, convincing us through their ceaseless repetition, or are they simply revealing what we truly are?
