Small Things Matter

Post by Loren Eaton » Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:52 pm

"What does this cubicle have to do with my job evaluation?" Phyllis asked.

Marcus smiled inscruitably. "Testing your attention quotient. Notice anything amiss?"

"Every day."

"Louder, please."

"Let's see." She pointed out the chair's torn cushion, the computer's missing escape key, the lamp's burnt-out bulb. Her Gift revealed more. Fraying wires concealed behind outlet covers. Moldy insulation under ceiling tiles. Things Marcus never could've seen.

"Why don't you look a bit harder?" he said. "Small things matter."

Phyllis stared at him. The spot nestled behind his left eye, a mere pinprick last week, now appeared pea-sized.

"Of course," she said.

Brain tumors are some kinda freaky. I had a family member with one. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I'm slightly confused. Did Marcus know he had brain cancer? If not, what on Earth was he expecting her to say?

He said he would never wish such a thing, even on his worst enemy. Unfortunately for him, I said no such thing. What a dope.

He's evaluating her for a job, testing her "attention quotient". She uses her natural observation, followed by her Gift of supernatural perception. "Small things matter" is a kind of insult, since she has already exceeded all normal human capacity. My take was that Marcus expected more along the same lines , the twist being a kind of "Well, since you asked..."

@SC: Marcus has no idea that he has brain cancer. He probably wouldn't have symptoms until the tumor got walnut-sized. My intent with the "small things matter" comment was ironic.

@ROU: I hope you mean Marcus and not me!

@Strawman: Bingo. You got it.

Is attention quotient a thing now? I mean, she already pointed out amazing levels of detail. Marcus seems like he's just dicking around. What else is he going to pull out to go, "Aha, but you didn't see X!"?

Pretty much. This piece is actually based off a test that my former editor came up with for prospective employees. His version wasn't quite so extreme, but it came close.
