Blood, Sweat, and Irrigation

Post by Bejami »

Mason cracked a beer and sat down at his kitchen table. It had been a long day in the fields, and he wanted to relax for a moment before cleaning his implements.

He felt a twinge of guilt about how he had treated his day laborers and their families, but he felt the health of his corn was more important. With no precipitation for the past two months, he risked losing his entire crop for the third year. These were desperate times.

They say people are mostly water.

Since it wouldn't rain, he had found other ways to provide moisture.

Oh yeah, they did conserve people's water in Dune. I was more inspired by the major lack of moisture and associated stresses in the western U.S. (even though soy beans are more of a midwest thing)

The first draft was soy beans. I forgot I changed it during the process of making the word count match up.
