I had traveled across continents for my research. The once-great monastery had fallen into decrepitude; its remaining caretakers a few elderly monks. One of whom, flattered by my attention, beckoned me into a nearby cell where he lowered his robe and exposed his back to me.

Samsara; the endless cycle of death and rebirth. Etched across his leathery back were heavens and hells; realms of suffering, desire and enlightenment, in exquisite color and minute detail.
I asked, “Is it not forbidden in your order to mark flesh with tattoos?” The old monk grinned and replied, “I was born with them.”

Nicely drafted drabble and excellent use of the word, "decrepitude".
