The Execution

Post by ROU Killing Time » Thu Jul 23, 2009 6:55 pm

The condemned man lay on the gurney, needles placed in his arm.

The seated witnesses watched as the warden spoke the sentence.

“John C. Morgan, having been found guilty of murder in the first degree by a jury of your peers and sentenced to the ultimate punishment that can be meted out you may now give any final words before the sentence is carried out.”

Shaking his head in negation, the warden gave the sign to proceed.

As the immortality nanites flooded his sytem and the stone block sealed the chamber he began his life imprisonment without possibility of parole.

That would "parole", not "payroll."

I like it. For murder, we sentence you to hell.

Thx for the proofread (I knocked this off quickly in a restaraunt on the cape with my 4 year old yammering at me and general chaos surrounding)

I feel pretty good about this one. I think it's one of the better "twists" I've pulled off so far.

Yup, I like it. Perhaps the title is a little misleadingly misleading, but otherwise good job.

Great stuff. The frightening thing is that, given that we're only so many decades from entering the post/transhuman age, this could conceivably happen not too far in the future...

I figured your were going for JP Morgan, in which case payroll would have been correct.

Great story!

Quite intentionally misleading, in fact, to give more impact to the "twist."

Still, by definition, a perfectly accurate use of the word.

Execute: to carry out; accomplish: to execute a plan or order.

Maybe I should change it to "Bernard Madoff" and then change it back to payroll.

But I think that going for the pun would lessen the horror.

I suspect that Madoff calculated his scheme was worth it because his sentence would be short because of his age, and his wife and kids got to keep their millions. So the only way justice could be served is by increasing his sentence by lengthening his life (and getting the money back from his family).
So yeah, good.

Heh, no, though I would qualify myself as a transhumanist. When asked what my ideal job would be, I usually reply "Liaison between the hyper-intelligent machines and the remains of humanity in the post-human age. Well, that or a chemical engineer."
