The Secret Histories Of His Species [Category: Cnsprcy Thrs]

Post by Horrorshow » Sat Oct 11, 2014 12:31 pm

Black leather bound books hung from the ceiling impaled on meat hooks. The cleric had spent decades studying these archaic volumes, the secret histories of his species and the planet they inhabited.

The cleric’s disturbing research had shaken his deeply held religious beliefs profoundly. It had become abundantly clear that his race had only been put there to kill, fuck and destroy.

The shattered cleric presented his findings to the Elitists that commissioned him. He couldn’t tell them anything they didn’t already know. During his ritual slaughter, the cleric’s mandibles were stripped, his tarsal claws pulled and his thorax crushed.

I love fiction like this, where the reader glimpses part of a larger picture that's never revealed. On one hand, there's a description of a cleric being tortured and killed. That's not interesting by itself.

On the other hand, he's an member of an alien race with an ultra-orthodox religion that uncovers the secret of his race, which is that has been sent to the planet at some time in the distant past by another race as part of some sort of bioweapon in an unknown war. And the reader only finds out the cleric is some sort of insect in the final sentence. Now that's interesting. What's going on? What is this larger world that we only get a glimpse of? The reader doesn't know, and never will know.

You might find out... If my current plan to wipe out the planet with plagues doesn't work...
The truth may be out there, but lies are inside your head.

I actually thought this was a bit of a bait-and-switch, where we assume the cleric is part of the human species in the future, doing the usual wah-humans-are-terrible routine, but then it turns out he was never human to begin with. Implying what? That an alien species has the same problem? Or perhaps they're the ones who killed, F***ed, and destroyed the Earth out of hands and out of our league. Very fun drab.
