GUT instinct

Post by eric_marsh » Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:46 am

As is our tradition on Tuesdays, I sit in on a discussion between Professor Hardy and his graduate students. The topic is, as always, the most recent advances in physics. You see, the esteemed professor is the world's premier authority on the subject of the Grand Unified Theory of Physics.

I listen very carefully to the professor's words. Suddenly, something connected and I see a glorious vision of how all the pieces fit together - I alone understand the Holy Grail of physics, the Theory of Everything!

Leaping to my feet I shouted out in triumph! "Woof! Woof! Woof woof woof!"

Funny, but I must toss a yellow flag on the field.

Parenthetical penalty; Illegal double use of "as always." 10 yards, still first down.

No problem.

I've taken to slapping myself REALLY hard every time I type "as always."

I've had to switch to my left cheek recently. Bone is showing through on the right side of my face.

Eric, I like this a lot. A minor suggestion (feel free to ignore), replace "his group of physicists" with "his graduate students".

It is great that you are making up the running now that ROU is slacking.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had not considered the "as always" to be a problem though I can see how it can be overused. It seems to me that it's not a bad shorthand.

I could probably make another pass over this one and tweak it some more but I think it's basically pretty good. Perhaps I'll take another look later.

I presume that everyone know that the protagonist is a border collie.

That's one smart doggie. This one was lots of fun for me to read.

Well, I knew it was a dog, but a border collie specifically? Is that important? Did I miss a clue?
For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. (Titus 3:3-7)

That's because border collies are the only dogs smart enough to figure out the GUT. :)
