You might be right about the FreeForums factor. Maybe it might help to mention briefly in the show that the forum's been upgraded to one that doesn't have those same "features" that might make people reluctant to join?

Worth considering. But I'd rather spend the energy promoting the 'forums plus features,' not just the 'forums minus ads.'

We broke that the forums are updated via the social media, so word is out, but there are still a things left to do. Those will be focused around the launch of the new site, hopefully next month. We're looking to integrate the forums in to Drabblecast.org in a more seamless and comprehensive way.

Past that. I still have to put together the Forum Ranks thing (titles and little image badges based on post count) that I said I would a million years ago. And not that it is necessary, but to superficially communicate 'newness' to veteran users, I was going to eventually see about a new skin. PHPBB has had a few new, good ones since we last updated. Nothing obnoxious of course.

Promoting the forums on the show is good advice and something we'll be doing, but I think it will be best post drabblecast.org relaunch.

Well, I'm still trying to get the search function working. It'll be good soon.

Hah! Got the darn search function working.
Also got a simple 404 redirect page up. If anybody wants to design a fancier one, please do!

The forum's too easy for spammers.?.

Post by Algernon Sydney is Dead » Wed Aug 24, 2011 1:48 pm

Got new-post notice emails this morning, logged into the DC forum, and the new messages were all spam! 60 spam posts total. Worse, they misspelled "penis" in a lot of them!

And, I'd noticed several spam posts in the previous couple of days.

So, it seems like the registration and CAPTCHA are inadequate against the spam-bots. Maybe newbies should be limited to, say, 4 posts per day until they reach 10 posts or are otherwise verified as knowing how to spell "penis"?

Likewise, a "1 post per 80 seconds" limit for newbies would hardly be noticed by humans but cramps many bot's style.

A spam blocking service might also help. Many of them already integrate with phpBB.

Well, it's good that you signed up before the new forum / anti-spam proposals, isn't it? :)

The akismet plugin is outdated and won't work with this version of phpbb.
I got reCaptcha installed and working.
As to post limits, phpbb has shockingly no built-in controls over this. I'll have to install some mods to make this work. Maybe this weekend.

OK. It looks like you have new users on moderated status, for now? (Looks like that's snagged 3 spammers and 1 legit user, already.)

Okay, I've bumped the flood interval to no more that 1 post per user per 3 minutes.
New users must have 1 post before getting standard permissions. That's likely what you were seeing ASID.

It seems to be working... went from a rash of spam attacks (could have been from the same group) to none in the last couple of days.

I notice spammers are leaving accounts littered with links to dubious, commercial websites (An SEO bumping trick), but the user pages don't appear to be indexed by the major search engines -- so the joke's on them.
