Important: Forum Upgrade

At long last, we're finally moving forward with forum improvements. During the week of August 8 - 12th we will be upgrading to Advanced Hosting, stage 1 of forum redevelopment.

The forum may be down for an unknown period of time. We hope it's as short as an hour, but it's all up to the fine folks at FreeForums to determine.

The immediate difference you will see if no more ads. The address of the forum will change too. The new address for the forum is http://www.thedrabblecast.com. However, they promise me that the old address will still work and redirect you to the new address.

We will be streamlining the registration process, making changes and fixing any bugs we run into. If something goes wrong, please email me directly- tbaker at gardenstreet dot org.

Thanks for the patience during this transition.

Long time coming. Because of my mistake and subsequent account deletion I had to re-register with our freeforums site - much has changed in 4 years. It is absolutely horrendous the ad barrage and deceptive interface. I can imagine it has lost us a number of potential users, which is a shame. Let's get out of here.

Okay, it's in their queue, so 1-3 days from now it should transfer to the new hosting.

But but but when can you repair my forums ID? I got busted down to rookie.

Don't worry about it, its a level zero priority. Onwards and upwards, drabblecast.org 2.0 time!

Looks like the old site icon and favicon didn't get carried over. I have to look at this hideous gray void on my browser tab! (And, I swear it stares back.)

If the old one can't be recovered, here's a couple:

Oh, yeh, good eyes, didn't even notice the disappearance. I have the old fav .ico file on my home computer. The temp looks fine, when I have some time though I'll swap it for the 'traditional' version.

And speaking of 'traditional' - my account is fixed. I'm lofty and seasoned again, hurray! Viva full control of our data!

Ok, Avatars have be re-synched. If the avatar file didn't exist on the server anymore, you now don't have an avatar, rather than a missing picture.

I don't know that has anything to do with moving the forums? I mean, we all got here fine.
It is the start of school, and people are busy. I dunno.

I'm also noticing posts by new people on the FB page. Maybe its just the nature of the spawn.

Tom and I have discussed the topic at length, considering the 'state of the Drabblecast forums' an aspect of the whole next generation drabblecast.org falderal. I had sensed and brought up the downturn. Personally speaking, I feel activity is roughly halved from this time 2 years ago. That comes from daily use as a moderator and gut judgment, not any concrete metric that FreeForums had to show us. Could be bias. Might be that the problem lives exclusively in my head. Like so many other problems.. Tom mentioned that the Drabblecast Public Domain is as active as it has ever been.

Assuming though there is an issue, I can't say specifically outline it, but do have theories. What I perceive as the foremost contributing factor is FreeForums' degradation over time. Nothing was amiss 4 years ago, when I joined. However, when I revived my account this month I observed a nightmarish registration page, with info hungry ads appearing like required form fields, and video commercials as captchas. This has to deter and repel potential, new users. Not to mention the overabundance of animated ads plaguing existing users.

It is natural for a forum poster's activity to wax and wain. Usually a steady flow of newbies covers for the departure or lapses of veterans. That wasn't happening at the rate it should, hence the observable decline. The drabblecast itself has more listeners now than ever, and our twitter and facebook communities thrive. I think it is safe to say the trouble with the forums is not a lack of interest. So I'm again steered towards the FreeForums 'ad'trophy' theory.

The good news is that thanks to an upgrade and relocation (thanks Tom), FreeForums is no longer a factor. Allowing for a few months of adjustment, we can see if my initial theory held water, and if the chatter 'round these parts is replenished. For now, if you worry, be a chatterbox, shape your reality. And we will wait and see about real reality.
