Must've been a significant storm to pick all those up. Yeah, I'm sure this might shock *someone* in to action, but that person is not me. This made me snicker as well. Oh, my cruel heart.

I'm a left-winger. I got a roof covered with solar panels. But that sort of ad is just stupid. It is wrong on so many level. :-) :-) Unless they meant it to be that bad. Like a campy commercial? Anyway, it's impressive how many bears hit the corner of buildings, then bounced off.

Wrong on so many levels, indeed. Except for it's universal appeal to your average drabblecast listener (regardless of which wing of the great political bird you fly on...)

But then, I think it's been well established that we're a bunch of sick puppies.

I must point out that those two things do not necessarily bear any relationship to each other. This righty would love to have an off-the-grid house.

I hope no bears fall from the sky and crush your panels.

Is there any way to make a falling-bear screen saver out of this? None of my screen savers have audio, and I'm thinking the thumps would protect my speakers.

Very true. I was stating that I fit two of the demographics trying to be reached by this ad-
1. Bleeding heart bastards
2. People trying to reduce their carbon footprint.

Instead it offended me. I'd say that's a failed ad... :-)

If it's pointed at you as a carbon-footprint reducing, bleeding heart bastard then the authors aim is all wrong and nothing more than narcissistic (word of the day) preaching to the choir, (since you are already on board with that concept.) It's real failure as an ad is that it is in no way useful in trying to sway anyone that is undecided, or on the other side of the issue. To them, it is only offensive (or amusing if you happen to be a drabblecast listener.)

As someone once said, "But, if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao, ya ain't gonna make it with anyone, anyhow..."

If dialogue and making people think about the issue is the goal, it is an abject failure.

They just come off as an a-hole ideologue. A perfect mirror image of the El Rushbo's of the world. (He doesn't say anything that sways the undecided or the left either. Of course, he's a bit more honest about not being interested in doing that. I think he's ok with being a cheerleader for his side...)

Very true. Well said.

I still think that more of them hit the edges of roofs and bounced down than statistically probable.

No: They just edited the footage for the most dramatic shots.

The greatest failure of the ad in terms of persuasive power (this is an amendment to ROU's "preaching to the choir" comment) is that one must already be versed in climate change lore to understand it. Its language is so esoteric that only people who already know the message can understand the message.

That's more of an "addendum" than an "amendment."

And, I agree. I think Tom's point about the stastistical probably of bears hitting buildings is the real meat of the issue that requires digging into.

Indeed: I think a valid interpretation of the video is that the people of the city are being blessed with meat from heaven. We have this city with no people in it. Obviously, there is a famine going on, and many of the city's citizens have died. Those who remain have put on sackcloth and begged the gods for mercy. The gods have answered.

I always thought the Little Green Men were a lot like religionists. You're suggesting that this is the scriptural equivalent of the Exodus quail. Good thinking.
The mystery to me is that at least quail fly.
How much warming does it take to make bears evaporate?
Isn't that more plausible than that they fell from a melted polar ice cap that had encased an ancient city of skyscrapers (which accounts for the absence of people, if not for the absence of floodwater)?
This video is clearly very unscientific.

I dunno, the juries out with me about man-made vs. natural warming. Maybe it's both. Of course that does lead to the question about whether we can (or should) do anything about it, even if it is a completely natural process. I'm guessing people that live in coastal communities might tend to think we should, but being a native Oregonian, I tend to think that global warming (natural or otherwise) is a benefit that is making Oregon the new California (climate wise) and California the new Sahara. (Take THAT Laker fans... fricken grass-carpers...)

If it's purely natural, is the best response to shrug and go "oh wel, bummer, screw California, least that takes care of the Laker problem?"

Wouldn't that be a bit like noticing an incoming planet-busting meteor and saying "Hey, I didn't chuck the rock at the earth. Not my problem."

Maybe we need to dispatch Bruce Willis to fix the problem. (If said problem exists, which I'm not saying it necessarily does, I'm not an planetary scientist... nor do I play one on T.V.)

We need to outfit polar bears with jet packs. If there is global warming, their white fur will reflect sunlight away from the Earth and drop temperatures. If there is no global warming, then we'll still have jet pack polar bears, which is surely an end unto itself.

I still think the funniest of the geo-engineering attempts to curb global warming was putting glitter in the upper atmosphere. I really hate glitter, you can NEVER get rid of it! Especially bad if you wife finds some on you.

I can see future geologists digging up a glitter layer.
