They conducted the study to determine why so many cats were being defenestrated. Seems Mighty Mouse was a philanderer.

The inspiration for this was from a recent WNYC’s Radiolab podcast, in which they discussed (among other falling themed stories) the phenomenon of Feline high-rise syndrome.
In short, cats in NY city were falling frequently (132 in a 5 month summer period), and cats that fell between 5 and 9 floors sustained greater and more multiple injuries than those that fell from either 4 or less stories, or GREATER THAN 9 stories. This is of course because the Terminal Velocity for a cat is approximately 60mph, which is attained at about 9 stories high, at which point the cat relaxes like a flying squirrel and belly-flops onto the ground.
The greatest recorded height (according to WNYC’s Radiolab podcast) was from 42 floors high, and the cat walked away.
