Its good to know scientists have been hard at work on this important task.

 Well, two things to keep in mind here.

First, science is struggling to combine the theories of relativity and quantum physics. Anything that is testable along those lines may lead to a bridge between the two theories or a new theory which blows both away but explains why they worked in the frames they cover. So, trying to understand time travel may well lead to a unified theory of quantum relativity. That would be a good thing.

The second thing is that scientists aren't interchangeable. You can't necessarily take the ones working on string theories and apply them to something useful ... like finding new areas in physics where relativity makes incorrect or less-than-perfectly-accurate predictions. It would be nice to take the money funding untestable scientific endeavors (such as string theory :D ) and apply it somewhere useful, but that's probably asking too much.

I didn't mean any real criticism by the way, I just found it vaguely amusing. :)

We all get one chance to experience the past. Mulligans cheapen the challenge. And Norm can attest, there isn't a lot of a living to be earned from unprovable speculation... unless there's really good cat-splat sound effects to go with it.
