Ancient Giant Penguin

The giant squid's arch nemesis.

I defy anyone to read this and not think of the giant, albino penguins from At The Mountains of Madness.

Is it a monster penguin because it's a giant penguin?
Is this another instance of sizeism?
The word "monster" derives from Latin monstrum, an aberrant occurrence, usually biological, that was taken as a sign that something was wrong within the natural order.
The word connotes something wrong or evil; a monster is generally morally objectionable, physically or psychologically hideous, and/or a freak of nature. (wikipedia)
So Morton was a proper monster. Not penguins.

 It's only a monster because I remembered a short story I wanted to write involving zombie penguins. And now I imagine them as prehistoric gigantic penguins. That are zombies.

I just finished the book "The Third Chimpanzee" . In one chapter the author talks about how almost every continent had numerous forms of giant fauna at one time before they did themselves in or humans did them in. Gawd, it would be cool to have this giant stuff around still, but I guess they would probably break a lot of our stuff.

Yet humans are getting taller... flash forward to some piece of futuristic fiction where the average human height is doubled. Lots of potential there for a story I think.

Turns out these babies weren't that much larger than emperor penguins and that the real interesting bit is the lack of the distinctive black and white coloration. The new theory is that the black and white is an adaptation related to swimming. So says Skeptics Guide to the universe. I still say a penguin taller than I am by a good foot and an inch is way more terrifying than one that is 11 inches shorter than I am.

I hear their biggest gripe is other penguins asking them, "How's the weather up there?" and assuming they can play basketball.

I am continually appalled by the callousness of scientists. Don't they know this penguin DIED for them to get this fossil? This is somebody's child, and all they can talk about is how heavy it was!
