The ant of Borneo will grab on to an invading creature, and squeeze itself to death all the while releasing a lethal yellow goo.

All about taking one for the species!

I wonder if ants from one nest would kamikaze ants of another nest but of the same species as themselves?

It is on the basis of such scientific curiosity that many a Drabbleschool science project is inspired.

Woah! Do you think we could hold a drabbleschool science fair?

That would be outstanding.

Can anyone think of any experiments they've heard of and would like to repeat or any novel ones they'd like to try?

(in addition to the intra-species suicide ant apocalypse) I'd like to repeat the one where they gave spiders different drugs and analysed the architecture of the resulting webs, and for a novel experiment I'd like to teach apes to swear in macaton sign language and find out if apes can invent new rude jokes and possibly become ape comedians.

Like the song says- it's for science-

This proposal would be an worthy replacement for the Nigerian Spam Scam - (Bo just has getting too good at one, that). Winning entries could be forwarded to the Department of Energy for next month's $457 million prize, now that the lead contender has been disqualified.

The school year has started, and kids and parents everywhere are looking for inspiration beyond playing Mozart to vegetables (Hint: It only works better than the control above 110 decibels at 78 RPM, but you still won't win the stupid ribbon, cause you're the dorky kid whose nickname is "What?".)

If we could petition Norm to do a drabbleschool science fair I don't think it would need to replace the excellent Nigerian scam spam contest, surely it could be in addition to it.

Is there a process for convincing Norm et al?

I believe our usual process is to beat the table with our forks and chant, "sci!-ence!-fair!" until an adult notices us.

One of the pithier comments on the NPR thread where I originally found this story was that the entire process reminded someone of several former girlfriends.

Makes me think of the Ignobel Prizes which were originally for discoveries "that cannot, or should not, be reproduced"

Ive thought of another experiment. On CSI once a women uses clay to reconstruct the face of a dead person from only their decayed skull.

I'd like to know how accurate this method is by getting a forensic face clay-mator to reconstruct the faces of 10 dead people from only Thier skulls and then compare the results to pictures of the people when they were alive.

Obviously the forensic person won't be allowed to see any pictures of the people under reconstruction.

The challenge with this is that it assumes that the employment of a professional forensic clay-mator would not violate the terms and conditions of the standard school science project. As we all know, these projects are usually done by parents.

So for this to work, you need to find someone whose parent is a forensic clay-mator.

I love the lane this thread has found itself winding down. I remember when it was just a wee original post. *sniff*
