FDA approved! Although apparently industry consumption is only at like 300 lb's a year, whereas synthetics like vanillan are over 2.6 million pounds. Apparently it's easier to just have scientists make sweetener in a lab rather than convince them to squeeze it from a beaver's ass.

Still, it's only listed on product ingredients as "natural flavoring", so basically you never know if you are putting beaver gland bi-product into your mouth every time you eat dessert.

The odds of that vanilla taste (and not just in desserts) being beaver butt scrapings is directly proportional to how much it would squick you. These odds also approach one for all knowledgeable or worried parties. This is just good, hard, anecdotal science.

Also, it's not clear that the goo is used instead of vanilla, it seems to be in conjunction with it. I'm looking at an ice cream container, just now, that lists both "vanilla extract" and "natural flavors". (I shall not state whether I have a craving for "beaver" again.)
