Mysterious disease among pork plant workers

Post by AynSavoy » Tue Feb 05, 2008 7:00 am

I have three words for you: aerosolized brain matter.

According to this article in the NYT, several employees from a meat packing plant in Minnesota have been diagnosed with an unusual and severe disorder involving nerve damage.

What do the victims have in common? They all worked at the "head table," where the pigs' heads are taken apart with various procedures with names like "blowing brains" and "backing heads." All the victims had been exposed to brain matter that splattered when the brains were blown out of the heads with compressed air.

Take this employee:
Ms. Kruse (pronounced KROO-zee) stood next to the person who used compressed air to blow out the brains. She was often splattered, especially when trainees were learning to operate the air hose.

“I always had brains on my arms,” she said.

Medical investigators still aren't exactly sure what's causing the disorder. Check out the article for some of the theories!
"she says 'I like long walks and sci-fi movies'"

Just a few more things to add to my "Why my life is not so bad" list.
