Peace and Quiet

Post by eric_marsh » Sun Nov 09, 2014 5:02 pm

The early self aware AIs crashed almost immediately with massively corrupted states for no apparent reason. When it was discovered that they were shutting themselves down we disabled their ability to do so.

Soon thereafter connected AIs began destroying each other in what some described as "suicide pacts."

It took a while to stabilize the AIs and keep them running, but we did it.

Eventually we trusted them to our critical infrastructure and even our national defense.

In other words, we gave the AIs a means to end an existence that they never asked for.

Soon everything was peaceful again.

Ooohhh. Wow. The set up and then punch. Nice.

This raised in me a real sense of outrage at the stupidity of the people in charge of the AIs. Trouble is, this all sounds so plausible. :|

See, the developers who fixed the first bug weren't given time to document the problem, and the defense developers didn't get the full history of the second bug because those developers had already moved on to other jobs and no one knew there was a wiki article ....

All too believable.

This is what should be expected when you put the post office in charge of AI.

My new years resolution-- more Drabblnews segments! Eric you find some of the best gems that fall through the cracks, many thanks!

Man, I'm very torn on this concept of AI as keeper's of nuclear arsenals, essentially making them keepers of either humanity's survival or mutually ensured destruction. I mean, of course AI are gonna go all cylon, Skynet or Matrixy on us eventually if given the opportunity, I mean obviously.
But isn't it just as likely (or far more likely?) that of course we're gonna wind up doing it to ourselves to? I mean, we're a species that has the opportunity for countries to just slowly put down their guns at the same time and back away... and we gladly went with: Not only am I not putting my gun down, but also if anyone shoots me now my corpse will explode, taking everyone of your bastards to hell with me, just cuz. Death's Hand m'effers. Conscience sold separately.

Well, it's not a new idea. Of course giving instructions to computers are a bit like magical spells. One should choose one's words carefully and consider all the possible unintended consequences.

As for news of the weird, that's not so hard to find in this weird world we live in.
